Who's Your Favorite Baseball Player?
Most baseball fans have a player that they like above all others. But why do you like that player? Just because of his stats? Think he's cute? Parental influence? I'd like to hear who your favorite player is and why you like that player above all others. I'll go first.
My favorite baseball player, is of course an Astro and none other than William Berkman.. ok, he goes by Lance, the Big Puma! Lance debuted with the Astros in 1999 and I can't say he's been my favorite since he became an Astro. I've liked Biggio and Bagwell forever, like most Astros fans. Lance has grown on me though. Besides his tangibles as a baseball player, one of the things I like about Lance the most is his personality. He has a pretty dry/sarcastic sense of humor and makes funny comments on a normal basis. When asked why he wanted to be called "Big Puma" instead of Fat Elvis, he stated it was because he was a sleek, athletic player that moves with speed and grace. Anyone who's watched Lance more than once knows that speed and grace aren't exactly his forte.
<picture above taken from wikipedia.. I think he dropped from the stands, because I doubt he can jump that high... kidding of course>
Another such incident involving Lance(which I'm sure some of you have heard about) was during a game at Wrigley field some fans were hazing Berkman(basically calling him fat) and waving Twinkies at him(more specifically, I believe it was Ding Dongs). Lance eventually turned around, told them to throw the twinkies down to him. When he received them, he opened the package, ate one and stuck the other in his back pocket. He received a great fan reaction and from what I've heard, received applause the rest of the night from the normally rowdy Wrigley fandom.
Let me hear about your favorite players(doesn't have to be Astros related) and why you like them!

Did I ever thank you for the picture?? I don't think I did!
Thank you...I loved it! :-)
Mike Timlin is my favorite player right now...even though a lot of "The Nation" wants to run him out on a rail because he's struggling right now. He plays hard, he plays hurt, he acts as a mentor to the younger pitchers (they call him "Captain" in the bullpen)...and he has a faith that helps him get through the insanity that is Red Sox fandom and the Boston sports media. He's only been in Boston since 2003, and he calls it 'home' and he and his wife spend an awful lot of time doing charity work in the area. After his career year in 2005, he was a free agent who was expected to garner a few good offers...instead, he fired his agent, dealt with Theo himself and brokered a one-year deal for less money than other teams probably would have paid him because he wanted to stay in Boston.
He's a talented man of character and I'm very proud that he's on my team.
Take care, hon!

Hey man love the Berkman pic, funny stuff. Would have to say Nolan Ryan would be my all time favorite player. He is the reason I am an astros fan today. Living here in tennessee the only baseball I had to watch was saturday on nbc. I saw him pitch in 1980 a few times, and have been a die hard stros fan since. Still trying to get all of his baseball cards. Currently I would have to say Roy O, would be my fav, and I would they wrap him up for five more. Hope his on his game tonight, go stros!

Unfortunately for me, when Ryan was pitching for the Astros, I was young(only 25 now) so I didn't really get to see him pitch.. From what I'm hearing, the Astros and Roy's agent(s) were still in discussions as of about 6 pm. Would be great if we found out something soon!

Craig Biggio has to be my favorite player of all time, he's a gritty player that is exactly the kind of role model that I think athletes should be. He has been helping the Sunshine Kids forever and seems to be just an all around good guy who is there to help his team win. Also as of lately his comments through his son Connor(i think thats the spelling) in his interviews w/ Brad Ausmus are fricking hilarious, and thats a side of Biggio you don't get to see that often. Berkman is definatly 2nd though, for all the same reasons that Thomas has posted, and the fact that he is a homegrown talent that went to Rice. I think thats awesome.
P.S. press conference tonight about Oswalt?!?!

Lance is my favorite, hands down! I've always enjoyed college baseball, and I saw him play at Rice. Right after high school, in '99, I was in love with him and also with Scott Elarton. I remember being torn between which of the two was my favorite. I picked Elarton, but he went downhill fast, and when the Astros got rid of him, Lance took sole possession of 1st! And he's been there ever since! Okay, I have to admit- it's partially because I think he's really cute (I know many others disagree), but that's not all! I think he's hilarious (Take the Twinkies thing and the nickname, for example), and he also seems like a really great guy! He leads a Bible study for the team, and he doesn't mind sharing his faith and his testimony. And he can play ball okay, too! =)
